The deadline. Anyone working or volunteering at a regulated service before 14 August 2026 must complete the foundation child safety training by 27 August 2026. From 14 August 2026, new staff must complete it within 14 days of employment or before working directly with children, whichever comes first. Advanced training for those in relevant roles is due 31 March 2027, for anyone holding such a role before 30 September 2026. Refresher training is required every two years. The part nobody has planned for. The training itself is the easy half. The obligation that will still be there in October is the record: a Certificate of Completion held in staff records, for every person, findable on request, with the two-year refresher date tracked.
If you are relying on a folder of PDF certificates in an inbox, you do not have a system — you have a pile.
What a training register has to do
- Name, role, start date, whether they started before or after 14 August 2026
- Foundation training: date completed, certificate held yes/no, and where it is filed
- Whether they hold a relevant role, and therefore whether advanced training applies
- Advanced training: due date, date completed, certificate held
- Refresher due date, calculated
- A single “last verified” field, so you can prove the register is maintained, not just created
